Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

Hi Year 1,

Welcome to Year 1, we are all pleased to be back at school and we are glad to see so many smiling faces and happy children returning to school this term. We've all settled into a new routine and the children have been learning lots of new things already.

The children have been working hard on remembering their phonic sounds and enjoying handwriting lessons. We have also been discussing and writing some tricky words. Please find below a copy of the children's tricky words in PDF and word format for you to use at home to support their learning. By June 2021 we expect all children to be able to read and write all of their tricky words up to and including Phase 5. To support their learning if you could help them to spot them in their reading books and spell them outload that would be great. So read, read, read and get tricky word spotting!

A hard copy of the Tricky Word's has been sent home in your child's book bag this week.

Here's to a fabulous Autumn term.

Best wishes from the Year 1 team.

How many words can you read and write?

Down Behind the Dustbin

Still image for this video
This poem is read to you by Mrs Fisher. Can you make up a rhyme using your name? Mrs Fisher's examples below are great!

Down behind the dustbin I met Mrs Young.
She'd just eaten her lunch and she'd burnt her tongue.

Down behind the dustbin I met Mrs M.
She'd been watering the plants, but one had a broken stem.

Down behind the dustbin I met Miss Mahoney.
She'd made a fish stew but it was a little bony.

Down behind the dustbin I met Mrs A.
The bell had just rung so she'd sent her children out to play.

Good morning Year 1,

We hope you have all had an enjoyable weekend with your family.  The Year 1 Team have all been very and very resilient at getting the story time videos prepared for you. Lets just say it was far more complicated than we had anticipated but even though we were at the bottom of the learning pit for a while, as a team we have pulled ourselves out and thankfully have a bank of stories prepared for you.  We hope you enjoy listening to them.

Remember to stay safe and keep washing your hands!

Dear Year 1,

We hope you enjoyed the story read by Miss Mahoney yesterday.  Today we have a story from Mrs Adimaly for you to enjoy - watch this space for more stories in the coming days.

Parents, unfortunately White Rose maths are discontinuing their free resources this week and there is a need to subscribe.  Can we point you to another excellent website - Oak National Academy - search for year 1 and there is a schedule of learning for Maths, English and other subjects.  These are led by teachers via a video and are a great resource.  Give them a go and let us know how you get on.

Spring Has Sprung

We hope you have all had a super half term and enjoyed family time.

Our topic this half term will be 'Spring Has Sprung'.  Don't forget to look at the topic newsletter for more details on our exciting half term.

This week we will be focussing on the traditional tale Jack and the Beanstalk and basing our work around this story.  If you have your own version of this story at home please read it with your child.

In maths, we will be using the book Jim and the Beanstalk.  Jim has to use his measuring skills and so will the children.  Can you practise measuring things around the house?  Guess, what is longer than a metre?  What is shorter than a metre?

Hopefully the weather will improve enough to allow us to go for spring walks around our grounds.  The children will be identifying species in our school environment.

Welcome back Year 1.

Don't forget to look up the topic newsletter on the website to see what we will be up to all half term.

Our learning this week:

Weighing - talk to your children about how heavy an object is.  Is it heavier or lighter than a pencil?  How do you know?

Time

Telling the time to the hour and half hour.  Can you practise reading the time on an analogue clock to the hour and half hour?

Weekly Words

All weekly words can be found in the back of your child's reading diary.  Please continue to work through these words at your child's pace.

We are focussing on reading the words Mr, Mrs and people this week so please have an extra practise at these words.

Welcome to Year 1!

We have been busy writing cards to the Queen this week and hopefully will recieve a reply in the new year.

The children have had great fun making a tea cup for the postman out of clay.  They looked at many different designs of cups, came up with their own designs and made their own tea cups.

During music the children have had the opportunity to make a musical instruments and will perform  the story of the Jolly Postman in the coming weeks.

Suggestions for home

Read a bedtime story together

Who would you like to write a letter to?  Maybe they will reply.

Look at coins and their values.  Can you make some simple amounts using pennies.

Practise counting in 10s up to and back from 100
